Grading Policies

Each component of the grade will be weighed according to:

  • Exams (3 @ 17 % each)...51%
  • Final...............................30
  • Homework......................15
  • in-class worksheets...........4
---------------------------------------------------
  • TOTAL...............................100%
Your final score based upon the weightings listed above will be compared to the following scale to determine the letter grades (i.e. there is not a curve in PHY117B.02):
  A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D F
Percentage 90-100 85-89 80-84 75-79 70-74 65-69 60-64 55-59 50-54 45-49 below 45

Here is the Amazing Grade Calculator

MISSED EXAMS: There will be no make-up exams in PHYS117B.02 , since the exams will be given during the regularly scheduled class time. If a student has a legitimate reason to miss an exam (medical emergency) then a score according to the student's standing in the FINAL exam will be calculated for the missed exam and added to the total score.

GRADING ERRORS ON EXAMS: We are human, and try as we may, will probably make some errors in grading exams. You will be given a chance to look over the solutions of the exams and a few days after that, I will make a full day available ( i.e. from 9am to 5 pm) for students to come to my office and discuss their exam. All requests to reconsider your grade should be made during that day. I will not reconsider grades on mid-term exams later in the semester.

HOMEWORK
For homework sets submitted by the deadline, MasteringPhysics uses the following grading algorithm:
  • You will typically get 5 attempts to correctly answer a non-multiple choice question. There will be a small penalty (1%) for each try after the first one.
  • For multiple choice questions, you lose 1/(n-1) points, where n is the number of options to choose from, for each unique wrong answer you submit.
  • You will not gain extra credit for solving a problem without using th hints, nor will you loose points for opening the hints. USE them - they are there to help you! More information on how using HINTS works is here.

LATE HOMEWORK For homework sets submitted after the deadline, your score (calculated as above) will be multiplied by a late penalty factor. At the deadline this factor is equal to 1 (no penalty). Over the course of the next 24 hours, it decreases linearly to 0.5. After 24 hours past the deadline, it remains at 0.5. Thus homework that is more than a day late will be receive a maximum of 50% partial credit.

IN-CLASS WORKSHEETS Your participation in class is important as well as coming prepared to class, by completing the reading assignment. Short worksheets will be distributed in class once or twice a week in the end of the class. They will require you to identify and set-up a problem ( make a drawing, identify the right equation to use) or to aswer a conceptual question based on the material that was just covered in class. You can choose to work with a partner or alone. The right answers will receive 3 points and wrong answers 1 point.  No answer is zero points.

Grading errors in the worksheets will not be considered, since this is only a small part of your grade and grading errors are not likely to happen every time - thus it is unlikely that your grade will be affected by such errors.
