These photographs are from the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Living in Boulder for the beginning of my graduate career allowed me to combine two of my favorite activities, hiking and photography. Colorado is a wonderful place for either of these activities.

Rocky Mountain National Park (Estes Park Colorado)

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most spectacular parks in the U.S. park system. Unfortunately, most people only see it from their cars as they drive over Trail-Ridge Road. To truly appreciate the park, one should at least take a day hike. Better yet is to spend a weekend in the backcountry.

Lost Creek Wilderness Area

The Lost Creek Wilderness is a nice little wilderness area near Evergreen Colorado. Lost Valley is a popular destination, but otherwise the area is reasonably empty. It is also at a fairly low altitude (10,500' maximum) so the backpacking season starts early.

Marroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area

This is one of Colorado's most well known and most spectacular wilderness areas. The circuit hike from Maroon Lake to Snowmass Lake and back again is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful backpacking trips in the country. The hike is about 28 miles, circles the 14,000 ft. peaks of the Maroon Bells and crosses four mountain passes, each over 12,000 ft. in elevation.
